Where Forests, Lakes & Volcanoes Meet

Overview & Landscape

Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most diverse and visually striking parks, located just a short drive from Arusha. Despite its relatively small size, the park showcases an extraordinary variety of landscapes, including lush montane forests, open savannah, crater lakes, and the dramatic slopes of Mount Meru—the country’s second-highest peak. This compact yet rich ecosystem makes it an ideal introduction to Tanzania’s natural beauty.

One of the park’s most distinctive features is the Momella Lakes, a group of shallow alkaline lakes that shimmer in shades of blue and green. These lakes attract flocks of flamingos and a wide variety of water birds, creating a peaceful and picturesque environment. The Ngurdoto Crater, often referred to as a “mini Ngorongoro,” adds another layer of scenic drama with its forested rim and wildlife-filled floor.

Wildlife & Unique Safari Experience

Although Arusha National Park does not host the Big Five in full, it offers a unique and rewarding wildlife experience. Visitors can encounter giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, warthogs, and a variety of antelope species roaming freely across the park. The dense forest areas are home to black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys, providing excellent opportunities for primate viewing.

What truly sets Arusha National Park apart is the opportunity for non-traditional safari activities. Guided walking safaris allow visitors to explore the wilderness on foot, offering a closer and more immersive connection with nature. Canoeing safaris on the Momella Lakes provide a and scenic way to observe wildlife and birds from the water, an experience rarely available in other Tanzanian parks.

Activities & Travel Experience

Arusha National Park is perfect for day trips, short safaris, and pre- or post-Kilimanjaro excursions. Climbing Mount Meru is a popular activity for trekkers looking for a challenging yet less crowded alternative to Kilimanjaro, with stunning views and rich wildlife encounters along the way.

The park’s accessibility, combined with its varied attractions, makes it ideal for travelers with limited time or those seeking a quieter, more relaxed safari experience. Whether it’s a game drive, a walking safari, or simply enjoying the scenic landscapes, Arusha National Park offers a refreshing and intimate perspective on Tanzania’s wilderness.
